Jake Smith is a 6’4″/180 lb. senior point guard who transferred from Johnson University Florida to Point University in July of 2020. He is a 2018 graduate of All Saints’ Academy where he was a regional champion, averaged 14.2 points per game, and was ranked second in the nation for assists. Smith is an extremely athletic guard, with a large build and frame popular among many college recruiters. He can jump out of the gym which helps him soar for blocks, poster dunks, and easier finishes at the rim. Smith lacks the outside jumper to earn the respect of his defender as he attempted just 15 three’s last season in 25 games, making only 3 of them. He does a good job of getting to the free throw line as he shot 77 free throws in his 25 games last season, but only made 53.2% of his attempts. However, Smith knows where he excels and uses it to his advantage as he shot 47.9% from the field in his lone season with Point University. One aspect of Smith’s game that is attractive to Coaches is his ability to evolve his game every offseason. From his freshman season at Johnson University Florida to now, he has shown versatility and eagerness to play the role in which he is needed. If Smith can continue to take good shots and convert them, along with improving from the free throw line, he should have no problem getting buckets without a consistent three point shot. However, Smith excels in other areas than just scoring. He averaged 7.4 points per game last season with the Skyhawks, but brings much more to the table on both offense and defense. He averaged 5 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game last season in just 26 minutes per game. On the opposite side of the ball, he averaged 1.5 steals per game and played great perimeter on-ball defense. His ability to spread the floor and cause chaos on the defensive end of the ball makes him an immediate impact player. Point University finished last season 18-7 and lost to Union in the AAC Tournament. However, the Skyhawks showed us the potential they had as they rode a 10 game win streak through the mid to late parts of the season and look to come back this year looking for revenge as they have plenty of players returning, led by Jake Smith. Smith will have a couple more options such as a potential lob threat Javier Turner, a transfer from the University of Wyoming. As Smith is in his senior year, he will look to gain attention from scouts at the professional level and raise his list of accomplishments at the college level. Hungry for his second conference championship in college basketball, Smith will look to lead his team to the finish line with what hopefully will be new hardware.
