Pirates’ Coaching Revamp: Blending Legacy and Local Talent

October 5, 2023 – Tarpon Springs, FL –

Following their 20-38 playoff defeat against the South Florida Browns, the Tarpon Springs Pirates of the Elite American Football League (EAFL) are embarking on an exciting phase of rejuvenation. Taking charge of this transformation is the defensive maestro, Leon Orr, whose legacy at the University of Florida Gators is nothing short of legendary. At the Gators, Orr emerged as a linchpin, anchoring the defense with game-changing plays, intuitive strategy, and a spirit of resilience. His days at Florida weren’t just about perfecting his craft; they shaped his understanding of leadership, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Now, as head coach of the Pirates, the community eagerly anticipates the infusion of Orr’s competitive ethos and strategic prowess.

Alongside Orr, Ed Schenk, a name synonymous with Tampa Bay football, takes the reins as associate head coach. Schenk’s journey in football is both diverse and distinguished. From his playing days at UCF, representing teams like the Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL and the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL, to his coaching stints across various high school staffs in Tampa Bay, Schenk has left an indelible mark. His mentorship has molded All-American, All-State, and All-County players, and his deep connections within the Tampa Bay region promise invaluable insights for the Pirates.

Amid these leadership changes, it’s noteworthy that Coach Scott Fisk chose to voluntarily step down from his head coaching role, marking an end to an era that saw the Pirates secure four playoff spots since 2012. However, Fisk’s dedication to the Pirates remains unwavering as he continues to be a crucial part of team operations, ensuring a blend of continuity and fresh perspectives.

In a strategic move to bolster their lineup, the Pirates have tapped into the USF talent pool, bringing aboard Nate Ferguson, Trevor Steinke, and Jamal Nash. Each of these players carved a niche for themselves during their tenure with the USF Bulls, showcasing their skills, determination, and adaptability on the field. By integrating these accomplished players into their roster, the Pirates have made a clear statement: they’re deeply invested in recognizing and nurturing local talent. This approach, when merged with the wider expertise and experience already present in the team, is a testament to the Pirates’ commitment to creating a balanced and formidable lineup for the EAFL.

With a community that’s as passionate as Tarpon Springs behind them, the Pirates are crafting a compelling narrative for the upcoming season. Melding Orr’s defensive brilliance, Schenk’s vast experience, and Fisk’s continued insights, the Pirates are shaping a journey that promises tradition, innovation, and football excellence.

Jonathan Brown started SPCSN in 2018 as a sports highlight company and started with doing videos for friends and teammates at his Alma Mater Johnson University Florida. As he progressed as an athlete and sports broadcaster in college, he began to see a need for many small colleges and semi-professional teams. He became fascinated with local team markets and wanted to show the whole world what these teams showed. In 2019, Brown transitioned his business into a sports network focused on non-NCAA DI schools, semi-professional sports, and select minor/development leagues. Brown currently serves as the CEO and chairman of the board.
