Banyan’s Bold Debut: New College of Florida Makes History in Thrilling Opener

February 3, 2024 – Bradenton, FL –

In a momentous evening filled with excitement and unforgettable plays, the New College of Florida men’s baseball team opened their 2024 season in grand style. At the picturesque Spring Training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Lecom Park, the Banyan’s secured a historic 8-7 victory over IMG Academy, marking a significant milestone as the program clinched their inaugural win. The atmosphere was electric from the outset, with New College President Richard Corcoran delivering an impressive ceremonial first pitch strike. This set the stage for what would be a night to remember in Sarasota.

The Banyan’s etched their name in the annals of New College history during the second inning when sophomore catcher Matthew Merk stepped up to the plate. With a runner in scoring position, Merk connected with a fastball, driving the ball past the infield. The roar of the crowd followed the Banyan’s base runner as he crossed home plate, marking the first run of the evening. New College’s pitching staff laid the foundation for their victory, delivering a standout performance over the initial seven innings. They allowed just two earned runs while giving up a mere four hits. This stellar performance allowed the Banyan offense to capitalize on the momentum. The Banyan’s offense responded by adding another run in the third inning and then exploding with a five-run rally in the fifth. Heading into the eighth inning, they held a commanding 8-2 lead.

However, IMG Academy staged a thrilling comeback in the top of the eighth, scoring five runs and narrowing the gap to 8-7. With the game hanging in the balance, New College turned to junior pitcher Jacob Platko to secure the victory. Platko entered the game with one out in the eighth inning and proceeded to dismantle the Crusaders’ lineup with precision. With just one out remaining, Platko executed one last pitch, sealing the Banyan’s historic victory in dramatic fashion. Jacob Platko’s standout performance earned him his first save of the season. On the offensive front, Jesus Fortis led the charge, going 2-4 with a run and an RBI, while Landen Morrison and Fernando Rivera-Calderon each contributed with a hit and a run scored. JT Leanos, who went 1-1 with 2 BB and an RBI, also played a crucial role in the Banyan’s triumphant home opener.

The Banyan’s celebrated this historic win on February 3rd, 2024, and now, with momentum on their side, they prepare for an exciting 2024 season filled with promise and anticipation. This victory marks a significant milestone in the Banyan’s journey, and fans can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for this talented team.
