Westchester SC Bolsters Inaugural Roster with Key Signings Ahead of 2025 Season

December 31, 2024 – Mount Vernon, New York –

Westchester SC has solidified its intentions to make a competitive splash in its inaugural 2025 USL League One campaign by announcing the addition of three key players: forward Samory Powder, midfielder Conor McGlynn, and defender Stephen Payne. These signings, coupled with the earlier acquisition of MLS veteran and Jamaica international Kemar Lawrence, underline the club’s ambition to hit the ground running in their debut season. The announcement reflects months of preparation by Westchester SC’s leadership, focused on assembling a roster that blends youth, experience, and versatility. The signings aim to set a standard of excellence for a team entering a highly competitive league during a time of growth in American soccer. These players not only strengthen the team on the field but also symbolize Westchester SC’s broader vision of engaging the local community and inspiring fans across the region. At the heart of these moves is the belief that a strong inaugural roster sets the foundation for long-term success. The addition of Powder, McGlynn, and Payne provides the club with a mix of dynamic attacking prowess, midfield stability, and defensive strength.

Samory Powder, a 23-year-old talent from Edison, New Jersey, represents the future of Westchester SC. Powder’s journey through the New York Red Bulls and Portland Timbers youth systems prepared him for success at the collegiate level, where he played for the University of Detroit Mercy and the University of Portland. His standout season with the Hudson Valley Hammers in 2022, where he earned USL League Two Player of the Year and Defender of the Year honors, showcased his ability to impact games on both ends of the pitch. Powder’s 12 goal contributions in that season highlighted his offensive instincts and versatility, traits that will make him a valuable asset to Westchester SC. Internationally, Powder has already earned recognition, receiving call-ups to the Trinidad and Tobago national team for friendly matches in 2022 and 2023. This international exposure reflects his potential to grow into a prominent figure not only for Westchester SC but also in the global soccer landscape. The younger brother of Trinidad and Tobago international Noah Powder, Samory is eager to carve out his own legacy in professional soccer.

Returning to his home state of New York, 26-year-old Conor McGlynn brings leadership and experience to Westchester SC’s midfield. A Siena College graduate, McGlynn began his professional career with Hartford Athletic in the USL Championship, where he spent four seasons before joining Rhode Island FC. With 117 professional appearances and 16 goal contributions, McGlynn has proven himself as a reliable playmaker and a tactically intelligent player. His ability to control the tempo of a match and deliver precise passes makes him a critical component of Westchester SC’s strategy. McGlynn’s impact extends beyond the stats sheet. His leadership on and off the field was evident during Rhode Island FC’s run to the 2024 USL Championship Eastern Conference title. Known for his composure in high-pressure situations, McGlynn is expected to anchor Westchester SC’s midfield, providing a balance of creativity and stability.

Stephen Payne, a 27-year-old defender from Birmingham, Alabama, rounds out the trio of signings. Payne’s professional career began in Portugal, where he played for clubs such as GD Estoril Praia, Varzim SC, and Portimonense SC. This international experience honed Payne’s defensive skills and gave him the versatility to adapt to various tactical systems. Returning to the United States in 2022, Payne played a pivotal role in the Richmond Kickers’ USL League One Players’ Shield-winning campaign. His two seasons with Forward Madison FC further solidified his reputation as a dependable and adaptable defender. With 100 USL League One appearances and 13 goal contributions, Payne brings a wealth of experience to Westchester SC’s backline. His ability to contribute offensively, particularly through well-timed runs and crosses, adds another dimension to his game. Payne’s leadership and versatility are expected to provide a solid foundation for the club’s defensive structure.

The addition of these players reflects Westchester SC’s broader goals of building a team that is both competitive on the field and reflective of the community it represents. Sporting Director Simon Baines highlighted the importance of balancing experience and potential, emphasizing that these signings align with the club’s mission to create a team that resonates with fans and the region’s soccer culture. Baines also underscored the club’s dedication to fostering connections with local talent and engaging with the community through various initiatives. Westchester SC’s debut in USL League One comes at an exciting time for the league, which has expanded to 14 teams for the 2025 season, the largest field in its history. The 30-match schedule will see each team play a home-and-home series against every other club, with additional matches against select opponents. The top eight teams will advance to the playoffs, ensuring a highly competitive environment that demands consistency and excellence. The league’s growth mirrors the broader rise of soccer in the United States, providing a critical bridge between grassroots development and higher professional levels. Westchester SC’s entry into the league reflects this momentum, bringing professional soccer to a region with a passionate fan base and a rich soccer history.

The team’s home venue, The Stadium at Memorial Field in Mount Vernon, New York, has undergone extensive renovations to provide a modern and engaging matchday experience. This facility is expected to serve as a hub for soccer enthusiasts across Westchester County, Rockland County, Connecticut, and northern New Jersey. The club has also partnered with hummel as its official uniform provider, signaling its commitment to professionalism both on and off the pitch. Westchester SC’s ambitions extend beyond the men’s team. Plans to introduce a professional women’s team in the future further underscore the club’s dedication to growing the sport and providing opportunities for players across the region. These initiatives align with the club’s mission to unite the local soccer community and inspire the next generation of athletes. As anticipation builds for the 2025 season, fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to support their team. The inaugural roster strikes a balance between seasoned professionals and emerging talent, setting the stage for a competitive debut. With a clear vision and a strong foundation, Westchester SC is poised to make a lasting impression in USL League One and elevate soccer in the region to new heights.
