The ABU (Arlington Baptist University) Patriots women’s basketball has been a powerhouse in the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) and the ACAA (Association of Christian College Athletics) for multiple years in a row. Since 2015, ABU has won the women’s basketball championship every season. ABU is a Division II school in the NCCAA. In their 2020 championship season, they defeated the Champion Christian Tigers in the championship game with a score of 75-69.
Although the ABU Patriots, along with other women’s basketball teams, have proven that they have the skills to do well in their sport and entertain fans, there has been much unnecessary criticism towards women’s sports, especially women’s basketball. In multiple instances, women’s basketball has gone through negative comments and criticism from many people. In the online article, ‘Get Back into the Kitchen’: A WNBA Roundtable on Sexism in Basketball, by Martenzie Johnson, it states, “WNBA players constantly deal with men questioning their body, skill, sexuality and basketball IQ for no other reason than a cavemanlike ideology that women aren’t supposed to play basketball — or any other sports.”
ABU has shown that women’s basketball is truly an important part of the sports world. They have proven that their talent and talent among all women’s basketball players deserves more recognition. Although ABU has won six championships in a row, there are teams that could have a chance to dethrone the current champs. The Champion Christian Tigers are one of the teams that has a decent chance to win the championship. They finished in 2nd place last season after losing to ABU. Earlier this season on Jan. 15, the Tigers defeated the Patriots with a score of 78-72.
Another team that could have a chance to defeat ABU is the Randall University Lady Saints. Before ABU went on to win six championships in a row, the Lady Saints were the reigning champs, having won five total championships in their history in the ACCA, including three in a row from 2012 to 2014. Although there are some solid teams with potential to dethrone them, the ABU Patriots are still ranked #1 and will be tough to defeat throughout the 2021 season.
